The mass tree planting happened last Sunday in the large central state: Madhya Pradesh between the hours of 7am and 7pm. Volunteers flooded the area, between them planting 66 million tree saplings. Their previous world record was 49.3 million saplings in 24 hours planted in Uttar Pradesh, Northern India.
As part of the Paris Climate Change Conference, India vowed to increase their forest coverage to just over 95 million hectares by 2030. The Indian Government has pledged 6.2 billion toward the agreement, encouraging all states to get on-board the effort. Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted:

India is one of the world’s biggest producers of carbon emissions. Delhi and the surrounding suburbs currently hold the record for the worst air quality in the world. India has also come under fire for coal-burning and burning of biomass fuel.
